The Foundation Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS is the place where scientific and technical skills, human sensitivity, ethics and Catholic values become a motivating commitment to the service of all, to guarantee excellent and accessible care to the whole community. The centrality of the patient as a person, the setting up of avant-garde skills, technologies and know-how, the ability to respond to complex care needs through increasingly personalized (and therefore effective) responses are the hallmarks of clinical activity and assistance field every day, 24 hours a day, from the A. Gemelli University Hospital. 8 clinical and research departments, 113 care units, of which 86 complex operating units, 27 simple operating areas, 1536 beds, 215 transplants carried out in one year, 94,509 patients discharged, 83,419 access to the Energency Room.
It is Policlinico Gemelli, a reality that confirms itself to be a reference point at a national level and – for a growing number of disciplines and specializations – an international excellence. With over 5,000 employees and daily relations with thousands of stakeholders, the Foundation Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS is a nationwide company that operates economically in a complex context such as the Healthcare. The merit of successfully operating in this delicate balance is that of all the collaborators who work, each for their own skills and responsibilities, within Gemelli. People who every day marry with motivation and commitment the mission of the Foundation, guarantee with professionalism and humanity excellent care and accessible to the entire community. The recognition of the Institute of Scientific Research and Treatment (IRCCS) for the disciplines of personalized medicine and innovative biotechnologies, obtained at the beginning of 2018, confirms the commitment of Gemelli in the field of clinical and scientific research.
During 2017, the Foundation distinguished itself in prestigious university research areas, as it was obtained through competitive tenders. These are projects that refer to scientific areas such as oncology, one of the pillars of the Foundation’s research, metabolic diseases, chronic diseases, genetic and autoimmune diseases (Amyotrophic Muscle Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis and Myasthenia Gravis), infectious diseases and new diagnostic systems. The second pillar of this commitment is represented by the skills demonstrated in the field of profit research, which, with the launch, in 2017, of the Clinical Trial Center as an independent company, confirms the Gemelli as one of the few Italian structures in the global service of the clinical research, setting a new industrial standard comparable to some international excellences. These are the research figures in 2017, the result of synergy with the Catholic University’s Faculty of Medicine and Surgery: 291 research projects developed, 33 structures of the Foundation entirely or partially dedicated to research projects over 1500 scientific publications, 142 activated profit studies in the Clinical Trial Center, 10.5 million euros the value of university research projects.
