Humanitas: Research, Teaching, Healthcare

Humanitas Research Hospital is a specialized hospital and research center, house of Humanitas University, an international university which is completely devoted to medical science.

It hosts specialized centers for the treatment of cancer as well as cardiovascular, neurological and orthopedic diseases. It’s also home of an Ophthalmology Centre, a Fertility Center and a highly specialized ER. It has been the first Italian hospital to get a certification of quality from the Joint Commission International and is obviously accredited by the National Health Service.

Considered as one of the four most innovative hospitals in the world in a Harvard University survey, Humanitas has been a case study for its organizational model, which combines clinical quality, economic sustainability and social responsibility. Credited by the Ministry as an Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS), Humanitas is a global reference point for research on diseases related to the immune system, from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis.

Humanitas Research Hospital is the main structure of a group which has control over seven hospitals: Humanitas San Pio X in Milan, Humanitas Gavazzeni in Bergamo, Humanitas Mater Domini Castellanza, Humanitas Cellini and Humanitas Gradenigo in Turin, Humanitas Centre of Catanese Oncology in Catania, as well as eight minor diagnostic centers.

Humanitas Cancer Center

Humanitas Cancer Center is a center for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological and hematological diseases. Hosted in a major general hospital, it provides comprehensive care pathways for the majority of solid and hematological tumors: from primary and secondary prevention, for which there is a strong commitment to public awareness campaigns, to follow-up and further, as a medical support program for long-term survivors has recently been introduced.

The mission of Humanitas Cancer Center is not to simply treat cancer: we want to take care of patients in a comprehensive and personalized way, using different therapeutic approaches which are tailored on their specific needs. Therefore, multidisciplinary collaboration is essential, not just between oncologists operating in different areas and branches (including medical oncologist, surgeon, diagnostician, radiation oncologist and psychologist). Any other specialist needed is involved in the different phases of the process of evaluation and treatment.

Research is also essential in order to constantly improve quality and outcomes of care. Humanitas Cancer Center collaborates with the most important international research networks and applies the results of different studies in all areas and phases of the process of care: prevention and screening, radiological and endoscopic diagnostic techniques, development of new drugs and supportive care, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, radiotherapy and obviously basic research, which is focused on the study of the mechanisms leading to the development of cancer.

As part of a comprehensive approach against cancer, clinical activities and Humanitas Cancer Center research are regularly evaluated by an International Advisory Board, made up of doctors and researchers of the leading cancer centers in the world.
