IRCSS Giovanni Paolo II
Dr Angelo Virgilio Paradiso
The Istituto Tumori “Giovanni Paolo II” is an Institute for Patient Care and Research, known as “Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico” (IRCCS) in Italy. The IRCCS is technically a legal entity –not a foundation– of relevant national interest under the Italian public law. Its status in the field of Oncology was confirmed with a ministerial decree on 30 May 2014, published in Italy’s Official Gazette (Journal of Records) no. 140 of 19 June 2014.
The Institute pursues excellence in cancer patient care and pre-clinical, translational and clinical research activities. The consistency, reciprocity and functional continuum between patient care and research that have informed our organization have brought added value to our processes with a positive fallout on our practices. Thanks to this constant blend of actions, the Institute was awarded the Certificate of Accreditation and Designation as a Clinical Cancer Centre by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) on 12 February 2015.
Number of beds: 109 for the treatment of adults with any oncological disease.
Number of researchers: 110 (in 2018).
The Institute has several dedicated cancer research laboratories that focus on: Invasion and Metastasis, Applied Molecular Genetics, Clinical and Pre-Clinical Pharmacology and Functional Biomorphology.
We also have a GMP-Facility for Advanced Cell Therapy and a Biobank for the cryopreservation and handling of biological samples (tissue, cell, blood and serum specimens) that follows national and international guidelines for the purposes of scientific research.
Our Antiblastic Chemotherapy Drugs Manipulation Unit (“Laboratorio di UMACA”) and a Hybrid Operating Room for state-of-the-art radiotherapy and interventional procedures are amongst our prime technological and clinical facilities.
